Quick answer

ATO debt help on the Gold Coast means planning around the seasons. Contact the ATO while you still have peak-season income to offer, check for Queensland Revenue Office payroll or land tax, and use free Small Business Financial Counselling if you're eligible. If one clean payout is cheaper than juggling plans, we fund Gold Coast businesses from $20k to $5m, including loans secured over Queensland property.

Key points

  • Tourism and hospitality income swings with holidays and events, so BAS often falls due in the quiet months.
  • Queensland Revenue Office collects payroll and land tax, and considers hardship instalments case by case.
  • In declared disaster areas, QRO may extend lodgement or payment time or arrange instalments.
  • Eligible Queensland businesses with fewer than 20 FTE staff can use free Small Business Financial Counselling.
  • We lend Australia-wide; property-secured loans can be over Gold Coast units, homes and commercial property.

Why is tax debt so common on the Gold Coast?

The Gold Coast’s economy is built on rhythm. School holidays, Schoolies, summer, big sporting events and the winter escape from the southern states bring crowds to Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh and Coolangatta. Then the crowds leave. A restaurant can take more in a fortnight of January than in the whole of a wet May.

Tax doesn’t follow that rhythm. Activity statements, PAYG withholding and super fall due on fixed dates, often in the quiet months when the bank balance is lowest. An owner who spends peak-season GST on stock, staff and repairs can be one bad off-season away from a serious ATO debt. Getting help here means building a solution around the calendar, not just the balance.

Who else do Gold Coast businesses owe besides the ATO?

The Coast sits in Queensland, so state taxes go to the Queensland Revenue Office (QRO), a state agency entirely separate from the ATO.

  • Payroll tax catches larger venues, resorts, builders and medical practices once their wage bill passes the Queensland threshold. Seasonal hiring can tip a business over without anyone noticing until the assessment arrives.
  • Land tax applies to land held above the threshold. Owners with a holiday-let unit, a commercial shopfront or a light industrial unit in Molendinar or Yatala in a company or trust name often face both land tax and ATO debt in the same year.

The QRO says it will discuss a payment plan in cases of hardship for its taxes, and that instalment requests are considered individually (QRO hardship). It also says that for disaster-affected areas, it may extend lodgement deadlines, extend time to pay “without charging interest”, or arrange instalments. That’s especially relevant on a coast exposed to storms, flooding and cyclones; if a weather event hit your trading, say so when you contact them.

Which Gold Coast industries feel ATO pressure most?

Tourism, accommodation and hospitality. Hotels, tour operators, theme park suppliers, bars and cafés all ride the visitor cycle. They collect GST at peak and pay it out at the trough. Our hospitality and ATO debt guide explains how lenders read the trading figures of a seasonal venue.

Construction. High-rise towers along the coastal strip, new estates in the northern growth corridor around Coomera and Pimpama, and a steady stream of renovations keep builders and trades busy. Fixed-price contracts, late progress payments and rising material costs mean many trade businesses owe GST on work they haven’t been paid for.

Health, beauty and personal services. The Coast has a large cluster of clinics, gyms, salons and cosmetic practices. These are wage-heavy businesses where PAYG withholding builds quickly if a slow patch hits, and PAYG debt can turn personal for directors.

What free help can Gold Coast owners use?

Service Who it suits Notes
Small Business Financial Counselling (Southern Queensland) Queensland businesses under 20 FTE and $10 million turnover, in or at risk of hardship Free and confidential; face-to-face or virtual
Small Business Debt Helpline Small business owners anywhere in Australia Free; 1800 413 828
Queensland Revenue Office Owners with payroll or land tax arrears Hardship plans case by case; disaster relief options
ATO Any business with federal tax debt Payment plans, deferrals, remission requests

Business Queensland lists the eligibility rules for financial counselling: fewer than 20 full-time equivalent staff, under $10 million turnover, based in Queensland, in or at risk of hardship, with an active ABN and trading in the last three months (Business Queensland). Counsellors can run a business health check and a viability assessment, which is useful for a seasonal business that isn’t sure whether the off-season loss is temporary or structural.

On the ATO side, if a storm, illness or family crisis caused the shortfall, read about ATO hardship and deferrals before you call.

Illustrative example: a Gold Coast tour and charter operator

A made-up example using round numbers, to show the thinking rather than a real business.

A family company runs boat charters and guided tours from a marina at Main Beach. It has 12 staff in peak season and four in winter. A run of bad weather wipes out much of one summer, and a vessel needs an unexpected engine rebuild. The owners keep paying crew and the marina berth, and fall three quarters behind on BAS.

By autumn, the company owes the ATO about $110k in GST and PAYG withholding. It doesn’t pay payroll tax, but a land tax notice of around $12k has arrived on a Southport unit held by the family trust. Peak season is five months away.

The owners speak to a Southern Queensland financial counsellor, who helps them map cash flow month by month. They then compare:

  1. An ATO plan with small repayments through winter and larger ones from December, plus a QRO instalment request for the land tax.
  2. A short-term caveat loan over the Southport unit to clear both debts now, with the ATO paid directly at settlement, repaid from peak-season takings.

Option one is cheaper if the ATO accepts the uneven schedule. Option two is quicker and removes the PAYG risk straight away. They ask the ATO first; when the ATO offers only even monthly instalments that winter income can’t cover, they take the caveat loan. Our page on caveat loans for ATO debt explains that structure.

If your figures look like this, you can see what’s possible in about a minute.

How does our funding work for Gold Coast businesses?

We’re a national business funder and lend to owners right along the Coast, from Coolangatta to Coomera and out to the hinterland:

  • Property-secured loans from $20k to $5m, by first mortgage, second mortgage or caveat, over residential or commercial property on the Gold Coast, in Brisbane, elsewhere in Queensland or interstate.
  • Unsecured and cash-flow funding for trading businesses, usually $5k to $500k, based on turnover and bank statements. Seasonal statements are read in context, not in isolation.
  • ATO debt, an earlier plan that fell over, or blemishes on your credit history considered case by case.
  • Property-secured funding possible in as little as 24 hours, with the ATO paid directly when that’s arranged at settlement.

Lending is for business purposes only. We don’t keep an office on the Gold Coast, and you won’t need one; a specialist handles everything over the phone.

Should you clear the ATO before peak season or after?

This is the question Gold Coast owners ask most. Clearing the debt before summer means you trade through the busy months without collection activity hanging over you, and you can bank peak-season income instead of sending it straight to the tax office. The cost is that you pay for funding over the quiet months. Waiting until after peak season is cheaper if the ATO is willing to hold off, but it’s a gamble if a garnishee notice could land on your merchant facility in the middle of December. Our page on ATO garnishee notices explains how card takings can be redirected. Weigh the cost of a short loan against the risk of losing your peak-season cash flow.

A seasonal checklist for the next fortnight

  1. Map your income by month for the past year, highlighting the troughs.
  2. List every ATO and QRO debt, with the latest notice date.
  3. Lodge anything outstanding so every creditor sees you’re engaged.
  4. Book a free counselling session if you’re eligible.
  5. Propose a plan that fits your seasons, then compare it with a funding quote.

Let’s work out the right fit for your Coast business

Seasonal tax debt is something we deal with constantly, and we don’t shy away from it. The enquiry takes about a minute, and asking us won’t affect your credit score, because there’s no credit check at that stage. We don’t hand your details to dozens of lenders, so your phone won’t start ringing off the hook. A specialist looks at your own situation and calls you. Please be accurate on the form, including your seasonal pattern and any QRO debt, so we can suggest the right option first time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free ATO debt help on the Gold Coast?

Yes. Queensland's Small Business Financial Counselling service, delivered in the south of the state by the Small Business Financial Counselling Service Southern Queensland, is free and confidential for eligible businesses. The national Small Business Debt Helpline (1800 413 828) is also free. You can deal with the ATO directly about a payment plan as well.

My business is seasonal. Can I plan ATO repayments around that?

It's worth asking. When you contact the ATO, show your cash flow by month and propose amounts you can actually meet in the quiet months. If a plan won't fit your seasons, short-term funding repaid from peak-season income is one alternative to compare.

What happens to my Queensland state taxes after a storm or flood?

For taxpayers in disaster-affected areas, the Queensland Revenue Office says it may extend lodgement deadlines, extend time to pay without charging interest, or arrange an instalment plan. Use its online contact form and start the enquiry with 'Disaster relief'.

Can I borrow against a Gold Coast apartment to pay the ATO?

Possibly. We write property-secured business loans from $20k to $5m over residential or commercial property in Queensland, and assess each property on its merits. Funding is for business purposes only.

Do you have a Gold Coast office?

No. We work with Gold Coast owners by phone and online, so there's no need to leave the business to meet us.
